Buckle with attached plate, covered in corrosion products. The piece appears to be made from iron, but the clarity of the x-ray and the various layers of the buckle it shows may suggest that there are one or more metal sheet-covers involved. The loop is of a shape similar to Italo-Byzantine buckles. The enlarged, probably stepped, tongue-base as well as the plate are decorated with round and wedge-shaped punch marks forming an equal-armed cross design. The loop appears to be decorated with incised lines, which are also framing the plate. There are two rivets at the end of the plate. Evidence for all this comes from the x-rays alone and it is highly desirable that the piece is fully cleaned so that further investigation can take place. II.?19b, cf Wasperton?
