  • Sword (ringsword) with silver cocked-hat pommel; total length, 920 mm (approx). The blade is in two pieces and slightly tapering, with sloping shoulders and a pointed tip; much is covered by scabbard remains and soil concretion, so the measurements of length and width are approximate (length: 920 mm; width at top of blade: 55 mm; width towards tip: 48 mm). Of the lower guard (original depth, 13 mm) only the lower, oval, silver plate survives, with a slightly outwards-sloping rim 6 mm high and a dome-headed silver rivet at each end for fixing the lost bar, but the thin metal upper plate is missing (length of guard, 78 mm at top and 77 mm at base; width, 17 mm max). Of the upper guard (original depth, 10.5 mm) again only the lower silver plate remains and there are traces of the grain of an organic bar in the hollow of the pommel. The plate is oval (length, 64 mm at top, 63 mm at base; width, 20 mm max) with a slightly outwards-sloping rim 5 mm high for the bar and a silver, dome-headed rivet to secure the bar at one end, while the top of the rivet at the other end is hooked to abut the pommel and interlocks with a loose ring decorated with small, punched, apex-to-apex triangles round the girth (diam., 17 mm; height, 6 mm). The silver 'cocked-hat' pommel is hollow, with slightly convex long sides and has traces of gilding in a band of three horizontal grooves along the base on one side (the other side is obscured by corrosion products); length, 39 mm; height, 17 mm. There is no hole for the end of the tang. The concave shoulders are slightly stepped in to tongue-shaped midribs with full-width bases on each end and there is a silver rivet through each corner attaching the pommel to the guard. Found close to the blade of the sword were a round-topped, sub-triangular, copper-alloy plate decorated with an animal head at each end flanking a human head (height, 45 mm); a lozenge-shaped, copper-alloy pendant with a face-mask and rectangular tab at one end and a longer, expanding tab with two notches in the end at the other and leather remains on the back (length, 99 mm); a short strap-end(?) with a face-mask on the curved end and a rectangular plate with a silver appliqué (length, 33 mm); two silver-plated discs with the stubs of central rivets on the back (diam., 21 mm); and an iron ring (diam., 32 mm). From their proximity to the sword the three copper-alloy pieces (and perhaps the others) seem likely to be mounts from the sword-harness, but it is probable that the copper-alloy ones are reused from a horse-harness. The silvered disc-headed rivets may be similarly reused from a shield. N.B. THESE PIECES SHOULD ALL BE DRAWN. DO NOT KNOW IF THEY HAVE SEPARATE SF NOS. IS ANYONE ELSE DEALING WITH THEM?
