  • Localised layer of homogenous slightly clayish sandy loam. Observed extent in plan 13.2m x 9m, depth typically 0.2m. This depositoverlay aspects of the prehistoric field system and also overlay the fills of ditch 36, tentatively dated to the Roman period. The layer could relate to scarping or erosion of a shallow hollow in the side of a residual barrow mound, and its subsequent infilling, possibly with agriculturally derived ploughsoil. A coin of 4th century date was recovered, and despite the presence of much worked flint, the minimal pottery assemblage was all Roman.
